THE PRACTICAL GUIDES

Computer vision consultants in Australia: brief an image-inspection pilot

A computer-vision project should start with the image and the decision, rather than a headline accuracy target. Specify what the camera can see, which condition needs flagging and what a person does with the result. A useful pilot might flag visible packaging damage for human review; that is a more bounded purchase than automating an entire inspection process.

This guide compares published capabilities from two existing Australian directory providers and develops an original acceptance example. It concerns commissioning photo inspection, without assessing a supplier's delivery or prescribing industrial equipment. For broader engagement choices, see how to choose an AI consultant.

Specify the output the user needs

Decision in the briefConcrete output to requestQuestion for the proposal
Which photos need attention?A flag against each identified image, plus a separate unreadable-image outcome. What happens when lighting, framing or image quality falls outside the agreed conditions?
What should a reviewer inspect? The original image, reason for the flag and any relevant marked region. Can the reviewer correct the result and record the decision without losing the original evidence?
What happens after review? An agreed queue and permitted handoff, with a named operating owner.Which action needs human approval, and what happens when the service is unavailable?

Use provider scope to form a shortlist

Kinetic Consulting's AI consulting page lists computer vision for image and video analysis, quality control and related business uses, alongside custom development and integration. That establishes an advertised service to discuss; it does not establish measured defect detection on your objects or a complete hardware-and-software quote.

DiUS's data and AI capability page includes computer vision, production operation and edge intelligence. Its scope connects data, software, cloud and device considerations. Ask whether your project needs a batch photo workflow, a hosted service or processing on a device, and which parts the proposed engagement will deliver.

Neither reviewed service page provides a comparable fee for the bounded inspection example here. A capability statement is a starting point for a brief, not evidence that a quoted schedule, accuracy or financial return will hold for your environment.

Describe capture conditions before collecting a demonstration set

For a packaging example, identify the object types, visible defect categories and the view that reveals each defect. Record the camera or upload source, framing, lighting, background and image resolution the project is expected to support. Decide whether a photo containing several objects is allowed and how the result identifies the relevant object.

Ask for guidance on collecting and labelling examples, including who resolves an ambiguous label. Keep the original image, its object identifier and the agreed label together. Specify how repeated photos of the same object will be handled when reserving evaluation examples. A collection of attractive demonstration images is not itself an agreed acceptance set.

Keep unreadable, obscured and out-of-scope images visible. The interface should tell the reviewer that another image or a manual check is needed, rather than quietly treating a missing result as a normal object. Limit collection to the approved objects and necessary image content; the packaging example does not require photographs of people.

An original 100-image example

Suppose an independently labelled, fictional set has 100 usable photos: ten show the defined defect and ninety do not. A proposed system correctly flags eight defective photos, misses two, and also flags six normal photos. It correctly leaves the remaining 84 normal photos unflagged.

Google's official classification metrics explanation supports separating overall accuracy, recall and precision. The choice depends on the task and consequences of different errors. A 92% headline alone does not tell the buyer how many defects were missed or how much review work was created.

These figures are invented to make the proposal inspectable. They are not a trained model, supplier benchmark or recommended acceptance threshold. Five additional unreadable photos should be recorded separately with their required follow-up; they should not disappear from the operational workload merely because the scored example uses 100 usable images.

Agree the decision and running queue together

Define what counts as a miss, a false alarm and an unusable result for each important defect category. Ask for the counts as well as percentages, broken out by the agreed object types and capture conditions. Decide who can change a threshold and how a later change will be reviewed.

The demonstration should show a reviewer opening the original image, checking the flag, recording a correction and finding the unresolved queue. Keep the permitted downstream action explicit. A model returning an image score is a different deliverable from a complete workflow that people can operate.

For handover, request the image-input contract, label definitions, evaluation record, deployed version, monitoring, access boundaries and failure procedure. Include ownership and export of approved data, hosting or device requirements, ongoing charges, support and responsibility when the camera setup or objects change. Use the quote worksheet to separate that continuing work from the initial build.
